Re: [Harp-L] was Seydel Solist Pro (Hohner Price Increase?) now difference between Soloist and Soloist Pro
Sealing wood combs can be done with 'Vick's Vapo-Rub'. It has oil of
eucalyptus in it and so is actually ok for the lungs. They use oil of
eucalyptus in the breathing apparatus that they use in the hospitals
to test your lung capacity. The rest of vapo-rub is really only
petroleum jelly.
If using gas/propane, heat the Vapo-rub in a double boiler, keep it
away from the flame. (I use electric, so I don't do that). When it is
thin and wattery, it will artesian into the cells of the outer layer
of wood in the few minutes you keep the comb submerged. I goes in
deeper than bee's wax.
Pear wood is much like box wood and is relatively soft. Maple (if
rift cut) is resistant to warping. That's why it is used for the
fancy carvings and turnings in furniture. Unfortunately that also
makes it resistant to absorption. Hence it's use in butcher's blocks.
Less absorption, less germ environment.
