Speaking of Dennis Gruenling, I learned a nice practice method for using the
water scooping grip with a mic you might be interested in, Garry.
He suggested using a styrofoam drinking cup in place of a bullet mic - and
you can hold that and play acoustically while you adjust the grip, and learn
to use wah-wah effects with hand adjustments. It's a very quiet way to get
that (or any) mic grip going. It works too, by the way - and the styrofoam
cup makes a nice effect. You can use a small juice glass instead - and that
might give you ideas for playing stylistically while using a standing vocal
mic. The water scooping method works well for bullet mics once you get the
feel of it.

Dennis Gruenling uses the "water scooping" cup. As far as I know he
uses it for both acoustic and electric playing.

true, but it beats the alternative.

i changed from the grip you describe to the one where you cup your
hands like you're getting a drink of water, with the harp held
between
your thumbs. i love playing this way acoustically, but cannot get an
airtight cup when holding a mic. so with a mic i play the old way,
though i can never quite find a grip where my fingers get in the way
to some degree. life is full of compromises.
