This was a nice post, and I agree that BLUES is a very strong and
complete form of it's own. I started studying Blues Music about forty
years ago and consider it to be the heart and soul of every other
style of music that I've since ventured into be it Classical, R&B,
Jazz or Country etc. What I mean is that my musical sensibilities
were 'honed' in my formative musical years by listening to and
learning to play music off of blues records, and it seems no matter
what style I play the "Blues Creep in".... Like shrimpdaddy sez, "we
are always learning", and yes it is more about emotion than mechanics.
Blues is not simple and boring, it is music that has a basis in your
heart and the therefore the execution of this music becomes extremely
personal. A good Blues performer can take this emotion and skillfully
SHARE it with his/her audience. Making his/her contribution to the
music that much more powerful, beautiful and significant. All genres
of Music are based on FEELING, but BLUES has an even more specific
feeling to project in it's sound. We too often get hung up in the
technical aspects of executing the music....when it's the deeper
emotive feelings that our audience is relating too.
Little Walter as many other players learned alot by being on stage
with a true Master of the Blues, Muddy Waters....it is very important
to go back and study and listen to ALL the great masters of any Genre
if we are to develop our OWN voice and place in that respective style
of music.
In these days we are all enjoying of High Technology, computers,
emulators, pedals, amps, mics, tubes, midi...let us not forget where
the FIRST item in your line of EFX should get plugged into for the
strongest signal...............> > YOUR SOUL!,-)))) Keep it Fun Music
is a wonderful GIFT.
again, thanx for sharing,
best,

it's all in what you get from the music, i've heard people say
that they evolved from the blues to jazz... if that's
how they feel so be it. in my opinion a true blues man is always
learning and does not turn into something else he
improves what he is. This is of course, only for a true blues man
someone who is moved, not only by the music but the
entire feeling culture slangs joyfullness sadness drunkeness
temperment. there are too many people who can't see the
forest past the trees too many people that see blues as too simple
and booring. there are blues men that say more in
one note than other people can say on an entire album. the right
cord placed at the right place played with the right
intensity and tone riging pure evrynote has to be as important as
the last. it's about emotion it's not mechnical.
patience, rests, silence why does everybody wanna fill every hole,
people are scared of silence. Popper has an
increadible gift he has tremendous controle as does Sugar blue and
Jason Ricci and i can guarentee that all of these
guys listened to and studied little walter as we all should.
In my opinion it's the best place to start and some make it a life
long commitment if it makes you happy do it lifes too
short to do what you think other people want. Play it from the
heart or don't play.
