I learned from Eddie Harris. He taught me to "syllablize." And trumpeter
Bobby Wetzel who told me to remember always, that music should be fun.
That's why they call it playing.

terrible...on the saxophone. That was me for a long time. But the answer
is don't give up. And play every day.

even notice till i walked out in front of him and smilled <snip>

That is a great reminder that the most important part of a musician's body
is your EARS. You will never be even a mediocre band musician if you don't
listen.

And... did I mention, you gotta play every day.

There was a core group of us who played every day together, for the love of
it, and we played together every day for about 7 or 8 years. When we
started we probably sounded pretty rough but we were playing for ourselves.
And we were having a great time so we didn't notice how bad we were. After
a while we started gathering a core audience who were digging what we did.

One year we were doing a Christmas party and I went to take a break outside
and noticed a crowd of people sitting on the sidewalk in lawn chairs with
their coolers having a party on the street and listening to us playing
inside. That's when I knew we were getting good. It was a great day.
