I found a very interesting discussion of difference tones at this website:

I had completely forgotten that I participated in this 1999 discussion on harp-l!
There's a link to an example of exploiting the difference tones in Siegel-Schwall's "Hush Hush".
Unfortunately, the link is broken. Does anyone have an updated link?
