Re: [Harp-L] Bending intonation...the regular kind (pitch matching)

Ah Winslow you are quite correct ,but i just assumed that Mike would know i wasn't recommending using an old burnt out 2.50$ harp or a m/m or (fill in)
I guess i should of added that he check that each note on the reference harps used(G, D Bb), be on concert pitch to give a solid reference for the 3 draw bends used as an example ie
Draw 3 on a A harp
G F* F
Mike(damn you ;-) ) please check that each reference note on the harps i mentioned is on pitch and makes cents
Esoterica max
Luv it

Using other harps as pitch reference can work if all the harps involved
are in equal temperament and in good tune.

If you're using just temperament or a compromise temperament, or if one
of the reeds has gone out of tune, it won't work.

Also, good intonation, regardless of the system of temperament, is a
matter of blending with whomever you're playing with. This will vary
according to circumstances, and learning to listen and adjust on the
fly in each playing situation is just as important as matching an
unvarying reference. The unvarying reference is a good exercise but it
isn't the ultimate goal.

Hey Mike here is a good way to set up a 'pure' chromatic set of notes
to
practise your bends to if you have a good selection of diatonics.
As an example.
Take a G harp and record yourself blowing* the 4 hole for (say)5
seconds,then a D harp,blow r the 2 hole,5 secs, and then a Bb and
blow 3 as
above.
You then have 3 pure tones (in the right pitch)of all
the
draw bends in hole 3 on an A harp to play along with to
'tune ' your ear.
You can do the same thing for any combination of
bends you
like.Sure beats playing along to a pitch machine.
* using blow notes probably helps to get better pure intonation than
using
draw notes.
