   I'm also on a fiddle e-mail list and there's
been a huge discussion of fiddle vs. violin there
recently. Most folks on the list are fiddlers,
i.e., they play traditional folk fiddle music of
one branch or another. Many would disagree on the
comment that a violinist can become a fiddler.
The techniques and methods of folk fiddlers are
as mysterious to classical violinists as the
other way around. Most fiddlers feel that most
viiolinists who have switched to fiddling aren't
all that great. Their classical training and
technique gets in the way. Example: Classical
players use lots of vibrato compared with
fiddlers, who use other embellishments such as
slides and the like. Another difference: Most
fiddlers learn by ear, not by sheet music. Many
classical viiolinists find it hard to leave the
cheat sheets behind.
