Re: [Harp-L] Re: Grandpa's Music

You rub the crayon into the record. You rub it in there very well, almost fill the groove with the crayon wax. Then, you weight the needle down with tape and a couple of quarters or something and play the record several times. You play it, clean the loose crayon off the record and the needle, then repeat.. The crayon wax will fill in some of the scratches, reducing noise. It can also sometimes cut the crayon wax so that follows the original groove instead of skipping, or sticking.
I just made him a really nice page, with pictures and a bunch of description and stuff, plus all the tracks at www.elkriverharmonicas.com/cecilpayne It's publishing as we speak, I figure it will all be done publishing sometime Christmas morning.

I've got a few 78s myself. Looking for some more Bill Monroe, I'm most proud of my Bill Monroe "Rocky Road Blues" from 1945, I consider that the first ever rock and roll record. Got some Jimmie Rodgers and a lot of Wagner. I've got the complete Siegfried opera and some other stuff, might even have the complete Gotterdamerung opera. Would really love to get hold of a Frank Hutchison, Clarence Ashley, etc. 78, like to find some more Bill Monroe, especially the remakes he did of Jimmie Rodgers. I do play them occasionally.

I would love to hear your grandpa's 78s sometimes.

Very cool that your Grandpa has a Myspace page! (I still haven't got one of those yet. I always
figured they were for the younger generations! But I guess your Grandpa just proved me wrong!)

So what exactly is "the old crayon trick" regarding 78's? My grandpa also made some 78's. I buy
them up whenever they show up on Ebay. But I don't even try to play them. I just like to help
preserve them.
