[Harp-L] Richard Hunter CD

Hey List,
I received Richard Hunter's CD 'The Second Act Of Free Being" at SPAH this
year. Most of you probably already know this, but Richard is a great player.
(In the interest of full disclosure, Richard was nice enough to give a
positive review to my band's latest CD - believe it or not, that did not influence
this review. If I don't like something, I'll always choose to be quiet about
it (publicly anyway.))

Richard is an active member of this list - he has insight into a lot of
technique issues & sometimes has opinions that I don't agree with. This is a lot
easier for me to accept after hearing this album. Richard can PLAY. He is a
proponent of alternate tunings, & on this album he shows why - on his solo
harp tune Widow's Walk, for instance, he uses a non-standard tuning, counter
melody, & double stops to create a beautifully haunting mood. In fact, most of
these songs are solo harmonica. They are all skillfully played, & display a
command of a boatlaod of techniques. Personally, I particularly enjoy the
tunes with accompaniement. How Long Have I Loved You and Blue Hunter are just
good listening tunes with a very nice acoustic guitar comp.

His style on this recording is a little idiosyncratic, but most any harp
player could pick up something listening to 'The Second Act Of Free Being.'

Later,
Rosco
