Was the first live harmonica recording the 1929 one I dimly remember
from morning radio?
I did a little research. Some live broadcasts from New York's Cotton
Club were recorded and reissued in 2004. Details here:

Some Duke Ellington tracks from April 12, 1929 include a track credited
to "Harmonica Charlie" that is listed as "non-Ellington" but what I
remember hearing was directly in the context of an Ellington
performance. Either way, it's blues harp broadcast (and recorded) live
from the Cotton Club, apparently on April 12, 1929.
