Re: [Harp-L] PIGNOSE 40 W Tube amp...

Actually, I bought this amp once, years ago, brought it to work, jammed on
it with the shop door open, to the delight of the entire vehicle maintenance
department, as well as the traffic signal maintenance guys, the carpenters,
the sign shop, and the police vehicle maintenance section. I sure kicked ass
for a relatively small amp. The sound went everywhere, and I think the tone
was nice too. I was using a green bullet at the time, I think.

I traded it in on the more expensive 60W Pignose, since it had built in
spring reverb, and a larger speaker. I'm almost sorry I did, though the
larger amp has been good to me, and quite useable with guitar as well as
harp. I just don't think the tone is quite as good on the 60 for harp,
without mods. The volume has to be way up before break-up, and by that time
it's feedback city. I've been told to trade tubes, using 12ay, au, or at
7's, instead of the factory 12ax7's, and did so, using the t's or u's, I
forget which, and it was still too loud without break-up, it seemed. Someone
also said that changing the stock Chinese speaker for a Weber or something
would help. He also mentioned swapping out all the tubes, including the
power tubes, for something other than the stock Chinese ones.

Then, one more thing, after having it for a few years, the input jack got
VERY noisy, and unuseable. I swapped out the cheapo Chinese plastic/metal
hybrid jack with a quality jack, and I'm back in business. We still use it,
my son and I. He takes it on his classical guitar gigs, in case he needs
some clean amplification.

But that's the 60,,,your question is about the 40, which I still highly
recommend. I have given thought several times to trading the 60 in for the
40, even without the reverb. You can always add reverb. The 60 is just at
that size that it begins to get heavy, if you have to carry it very far.
It's better if you have a decent dolly to move it with. The 40's no problem
in that regard.
