Re: [Harp-L] Re: Swing
One way to perceive swing is to subdivide a beat into thirds
"one and a, two and a, three and a, four and a"
The one, two, three, four fall on the downbeat - 1st beat of each measure,
or the tap of your foot when you leave it alone and it starts tapping to the
beat.
So, tap your foot on the down and say the phrase above.
Then bring out or accent the "a" - say it louder, still tapping your foot on
the down beat.
"one and A, two and A, three and A, four and A"
Now try leaving out the word "and" and keep everything else the same.
This is the feel used in be-bop and swing, feeling the accent on the last
segment of the triplet. Vocalists who scat will put syllables to it - "dwee-da,
deee-da, did-dle da, did-dle da"
