The Phrygian Mode is the 3rd mode of the major scale.
Think of a mode as a parent scale.
C D E F G A B C
If you begin on E and play E F G A B C D E you have a mode called phrygian.
You can also simply think it's the 3rd mode of C major.
Play it and you will immediately hear it's characteristics.
If you compare this scale to the Major scale (Emajor : E F# G# A B C# D#)
it has a b2 b3 b5 and b6
the most particular sound is the b2 because it's not found in any other
minor mode derived from the major scale (except the locrian mode which
relates to a half diminished chord and not a minor chord).
So to keep it simple :
Record or play a Eminor triad (EGB) and play over with E F G A B C D E first
in this order then in random fashion. Your ear will be attracted to the E
and the F will lead to the E too.
After a while you'll be accustomed to this particular "colour" and will
recognize it instantly.
