My personal experience with harp in bluegrass music has been similar to 
Smokey's. I belong to the Southeastern Minnesota Bluegrass Association, 
but I mostly quit playing harp and have switched to upright bass. I 
used to play more harmonica, and it was tolerated because the people 
involved are mostly friends and are nice people. I learned a version of 
Old Joe Clark and a few slower old-time songs and they were accepted 
reasonably well. But there were people that gave me looks of disgust 
and people who simply made sure they didn't allow me to solo in their 
group.
Overall, at least around here, harp is tolerated to a degree, but not 
really accepted in bluegrass circles.
Then again, I'm not a very good bluegrass player, so . . .
I'm thinking I'll spend some time around Cara Cooke at SPAH next week.

Yeah, and it's not like they're famous or anything. I did Old Joe Clark 
and even hit the double hit rests, Cripple Creek. They went out of 
their way after that to freeze me out. Went right by me. I took the 
hint.Â
