Re: [Harp-L] Playing what people want to hear

I'm with you about playing what you like, but I like some of that stuff
'cause I grew up playing it. I even got paid to do some of them when they were
still hot on the charts. I'm a singer though and I like to play rock on guitar,
I'm not really good enough at playing the blues on guitar so mostly I don't.
I'd do it differently though, and I'm working on trying to pull this off. My
set list would be......Alex Harvey, Frank Zappa, Little Feet, then one of
mine. J Geils, Humble Pie, Wet Willie, then another one of mine and so on.
Second set would be mostly blues like Red Rooster, Hip Shake thing and so on
mixed with the blues I have written. I would absolutely refuse to play anything
that was killed off by radio exposure. No Free Bird, Stairway to Heaven, Long
Train Runnin' or anything like that. I WOULD do a male version of Piece OF
My Heart maybe. Blues oriented classic rock kind of stuff to get us in the
door, and then kill 'em with the good stuff. To each their own my brutha, I like
doing all blues too, but this way I could throw in my originals a lot
easier.

Throughout the death of/reemergence of live music thread I've read several
people saying that you have to play what people already know and even that
you have to play classic rock. If I felt this is what I had to do then I
would just quit even trying to play out. I wouldn't set foot in a club ever
again. I play harmonica, people. I don't want to play classic rock. If I
want to hear classic rock then I'll put some on the CD player and listen to
it. Who would wants to hear some schmuck covering The Who or Pink Floyd.
Seriously, I play blues because it's what I think sounds best on the harp
and what just feels good to play. If this means I'm shooting my own foot
off then that's what I'm going to do. I heard Kim Wilson interviewed once
where he said he didn't care if he was the last one on earth playing what he
plays, that he was going to keep playing it anyway. I'm with Kim.
