My 2 cents: I own the original Pace Yourself on vinyl; I hear it's since been reissued, perhaps with remixing, dunno. I know from Harp-L that Phil Gazell's playing has made leaps and bounds since this album. I also own one of Jellyrolls' CD's, tapes or albums, i forget.
To my ear, Charlie McCoy is heads and shoulders above everyone in the country field. My own favs. by far, are his first 6 or 8 albums, all instrumentals. His MO back then was to take the orig. session musicians that played with him on the original great country hits that he was involved in, then replace the vocal with harp, then let everyone play the hell out of their breaks. His own work on many of these pieces is nothing short of brilliant, tho some of his breaks are understandably at a level that is unattainable for a novice player.
Even his more recent, more commercial sounding albums with vocals and without all of those Nashville studio cats all have at least one great song on them, for the learning; tho to me they are a disappointment compared with his older instrumental stuff. Check out his website if u are interested in buying anything. Some great CD's are still available.
