[Harp-L] Re:Sometimes you just can't win
Hi Steve,
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I posted recently about Tony Glover and said he (and Dylan) were the
only white harp players in my area when I began. I was chastised off
list, with a certain amount of sarcasm, I guess for saying that they
were white. What was the point of mentioning that, was the remark...
After resisting the urge to return the sarcasm and say that I like to
include a racist remark or two whenever I can, I thought maybe I should
post and and say that I probably should have worded that differently.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Before you might answer that sarcastic offlist consider some ideas
I had when reading your post.
Because music has really nothing to do with the color of skin it´s
absolutely superfluous to mention that. In the contrary, when adding
the skin color in connection to any human ability you risk the question
for your consideration and you´ll have mostly problems to give a
satisfying answer. Here´s another bad example of more recent history.
At the Olympics 1936 in Berlin Jesse Owens won 3 gold medals and
was the outstanding athlete of this event. All gold medal winners were
welcomed by the nazi dictator but when Jesse Owens was led to him,
Hitler refused to shakehand a "negro" though Owens was celebrated
by the German audience.
Since that time and specially after WW II the fact was investigated why
so many olympic disciplines are won by black-skinned American athletes.
The conclusion was: the "black race" must has better muscles or a
faster metabolism than the "whities" and similar nonsense more.
Back to the point of the subject. Everybody judging history objectively
knows why in the beginning the overwhelming blues players have been
black-skinned and the same might go also for the conspicuous number
of black athletes.
So, Steve, I wouldn´t answer that offlist post because I don´t see any
good explanation why you mentioned Tony Glover´s or Bob Dylan´s
color. What about Charlie Mussel-white ? ::))
