High Amperes are lethal, not high Voltages.  
Thats why a Tazer won't normally kill you despite delivering 50,000Volts
directly into your body.
  For myself, I find preamp tubes with a lower gain than 12AT7 takes
something out of the amp's tone.  YMMV
