how awful.  my condolences to all.  one thing you might consider is to
have the gig anyway, and donate the proceeds to fund CF research.
make it a memorial, or a celebration of his life; maybe ask the family
to speak about him as an intro or intermission.  it might help them to 
feel that at least *some* good came out of a terrible situation.
