RE: [Harp-L] Unlikely inspiration
Here's my two cents,
Bluegrassers, not just because they tend to master one but several
instruments, but they have this great ability to work together on stage
without stepping on each others toes.
I'm hugely influenced by the late 60's early 70's rockers-love to get the
Led out.
And since I'm from the deep south, the energy of the Allman Bros(one of my
best friends and riding buddys, co wrote Midnight Rider) and Southern rock
in general- help to shape not only my music but my attitude as well.
The list goes on, as a matter of fact anything played well and with feeling
influences my playing to some degree.

Subject: [Harp-L] Unlikely inspiration
Who are some of the not so noticeable influences in
your harp playing? Any influences that would seem
odd?
I'll start.
I am a huge Billy Joel fan. Way before I even knew
about the blues. I can't say he's influenced my harp
playing directly, but definelty my song writing and
singing.
Derek Trucks is a pretty significant influence on my
harp playing. I like him for his role playing and
lyrical approach to soloing. He's one of the few guys
I'll sit down and tab out.
B.B. King for his singing. I steal a lot of his
melodies and ocatve jumps for harp riffs. I wrote a
whole insturmental based on his vocals to Sweet
Sixteen. But now it would be impossible to tell due
to its evolution the more I play it.
Miles Davis is a huge inspiration right now. All the
theory I've learned in the last three months is
because of him. His phrasing is so perfect. Not to
mention his use of the chromatic scale and extensions.
Maybe mine are kinda boring. :(
