Re: [Harp-L] Unlikely inspiration
All you need to learn about music, improv, ensemble playing, etc., can be found by studying Miles Davis and his music. He created the idioms (and/or inspiration) of "cool jazz", "modal jazz", ambient music, jazz/rock, fusion and hip-hop. Curiously, it was his attachment to the blues that helped pave the way at each critical point in his recording career.
Miles also strove to find simplicity within - playing silence, not completing phrases, eliminating chord changes, taking melodies and playing the bare skeleton of the ideas, etc.
Since I am fascinated by melodic line, other inspirations have been Chet Baker, Maceo Parker and Stanley Turrentine.

Miles Davis is a huge inspiration right now. All the
theory I've learned in the last three months is
because of him. His phrasing is so perfect. Not to
mention his use of the chromatic scale and extensions.
