RE: [Harp-L] cannibalize a reed
Just blew out the 5 draw on a G Special 20. Can I cannibalize a reed from
another Special 20 to >replace that blown reed?
If so from which Key and which hole.
Thanks,
Paul
You can cannibalise a reed from another SP20 as long as the replacement reed
fits both the following criteria: (1) it must be the same length or longer
than the dud reed, (2) it must be the same width as the dud reed. SP20
reeds come in two widths so choose a reed of the right width. If the
replacement reed is longer than the dud, trim it to length with a pair of
sharp scissors. Go gingerly and use the old reed as a guide. Once
installed it will need to be (a) correctly centred, (b) seated firmly in
place (if you made the rivet hole too big when you removed the old reed so
that the new one swivels loosely, apply a tiny spot of epoxy adhesive to the
back end of the heel of the reed to secure it to the reedplate. Centre the
reed before the glue sets rock-hard). Once you've got the reed in place
you will have to gap it then tune it. It's all a lot easier than it sounds,
and it works. See Pat Missin's stuff as mentioned by the other chaps.
