Re: [Harp-L] Buster Brown
Hi Jazzman
Hey, that's exactly the kind of segue I'd hear on radio station KGFJ back in
my Los Angeles youth. That's where I first heard Buster Brown and got
interested in the harp (though I had no clue what he was doing). They'd play
"Fannie Mae" and "Is you is, or is you ain't my baby?". I just loved his
voice and his characteristic "whooo .." inbedded in his harp playing. Others
that do that well are Kyle Wooten, Sonny Terry, Hot Shot Love, and Rob
Paparozzi <g>
He was from Georgia originally, later moved to New Jersey where he hooked up
with Bobby Robinson of the Fire / Fury records labels. You can hear "Fannie
Mae", "Is you is ..", "Broadway on Fire", and "Sugar Babe" all on the 2-CD
set called The Fire/Fury Records Story (Capricorn).
Cheers,
Staggerin' Jim

So I'm listening right now to reelradio.com as they stream their Memorial
Day special. 3 hours
of the Real Don Steele on Memorial Day 1969 synched right to the minute so
precisely that even his
time announcements match up to the moment, giving an incredible "Wayback
Machine" experience.
So just after 5:00pm he played "Fannie Mae" by Buster Brown. I have to
confess I was not
familiar with this recording but is has a really nice harp solo right in
the middle of it with a
kind of Sonny Boy II feel. And then when the song ends, its immediately
followed by a RIPPLE
commercial! Whoa! Top 40 radio at its down home bluesiest! And after
that its right into "Oh
Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers! What a segue!
So who is Buster Brown - is playing the harp himself?
