I take back everything I just said about Taylor Hicks and the sad fact that
he represents harp players on AI. I guess at least he's better than
Allanis.
On quiet reflection, please let America think that Taylor Hicks is God's
gift to the harmonica. That way Levy, Madcat, Paparozzi, and Bonfiglio can
remain our little secret. That way we can continue to get their insights
and advice on harp-l. That way we can continue to go to intimate shows with
20 - 200 people and talk to them at the breaks. That way we can go to
SPAH's and hang out in the hotel lobbies and jam with them. PLEASE do not
put a real harp player on American Idol. That's like telling Californians
about Idaho. I like it here in my little harp Idaho. Can you imagine a
SPAH with TAYLOR HICKS playing? Madness, I say! We'd be cheek-to-jowl with
every remote TV anchor for 500 miles.
Thinking that the 50 million people that see Taylor Hicks on American Idol
is probably more than those who have ever heard Sonny Terry, SBW II, or
Little Walter says something. Yikes! (At least millions heard Blind Owl)
But then again, without the British Invasion, I might not have heard the old
Blues Masters either. I guess if I'm going to go off on Taylor, I need to
go off on the Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds, and Mayall too.
Hell, someday I may be covering Taylor Hicks and his Harmonica Licks in my
tribute show. You go Taylor !! I can see my retirement gig looming. Just
be sure to do "Help Me" or "Juke" on your first album....then I'm a
believer.
