RE: [Harp-L] Re: Taylor Hicks
I've attempted to vote for him several times but could never get through.
His bluesy style is certainly refreshing. Too bad he didn't get an
opportunity to whip out his harp on a couple of songs.

I've liked the guy ever since his audition when he sounded like a cross
between Ray Charles and Joe Cocker. I didn't know he played harp then but
he was my favorite. Simon voted against him and I bet he's kicking himself
for that mistake.
I think you're right that he's going to popularize blues harmonica to an
audience that knows, or cares, nothing about it at this time. But millions
love this guy and it's only going to bring more recognition to the harmonica
community and probably start a whole new wave of new harp players.
Say what you will about American Idol, but it's a lot of fun watching these
young singers going from a cold audition to polished professionals in just a
few months. And I'm so glad a guy like Taylor Hicks went as far as he did.
I'm guessing he's going to win it because his voice and his energy makes
people love him. I can't wait to hear him play harp for an extended period.
If he brings half the soul that he brings to his singing, to his harp, he's
damn good.

He is now one of the two finalists and is guaranteed a major label recording
contract. You can count on all of his albums having a good amount of harp
content, and he is damn good from what I've heard. It's officially a pretty
big deal for the harmonica community. He is going to bring blues harp to a
large new audience. Could have the impact of John Popper except Hicks plays
in the more traditional blues style. Surely most of you guys can be happy
about that!
