[Harp-L] Covering horn parts (kind of a gear post)
From time to time I play in a pretty large band (drums, bass, guitar, keys,
2 singers, one or two saxes, trumpet and trombone). In this setting, the
horns do their thing and I serve to throw in the down home greasiness on the
bluesier stuff we do, answer some vocal lines, etc. Now, for some of our
upcoming gigs, the entire horn section will consist of: just ME. We've
gigged in this format before from time to time, so I'm pretty comfortable
covering the horn lines and approaching the whole thing differently - just
another hat to wear. But I got to thinking ....... Is there anything I
should re-consider on the gear end of things to sort of play up the punch
and brassiness of the instrument?
Of late I've been playing my vintage Shure 520 mic into an ABY box and
running that out to A) my Harp Commander, which feeds the PA, and B) my
Marble Max amp. I'm very happy with this setup - power and tone galore, if a
little heavy on the overdriven sound.
So I'm wondering what you guys do differently (if anything) when you're
wanting to get a more "horn-like" sound? Different mic? (Besides the bullet,
I have these in the gig bag: 545S, EV RE-10, SM57 and SM58.) Delay or echo
pedal? Reverb at the board? A looser, more open mic grip? Nothing at all?
Again, just to be clear, I don't mean what do you do different MUSICALLY, I
pretty well know how to play the lines. What I mean is, what do you do to
optimize your sound to fit in with that role?
Thanks in advance. If nothing else, should be an interesting discussion. :-)
