RE: [Harp-L] Subject: Re: Harmonicas in carry-on luggage
Well, we all know how the airlines are good at losing luggage, don't
think we needed a press release for that, haha. The latest statistics
are pretty shocking as to just *how* many they lose, and that's been all
over the news the past week or so. Someone else mentioned that harps
looks just like ammunition on the x-ray. I recently had a screener thank
me for putting my harps in the tray with my laptop, and they repeated
this sentiment. She said "those scare the hell out of us when they go
through the machine". I think the best recourse is to get a low-profile
case like the lee oskar cloth one that holds 7 or so harps, and remove
just that from your bag or case, and put it through in the machine in
the tray with laptop, shoes, etc so they can have a look at it. That's
what I do and I never have a problem. Then they won't be pulling you
aside or ripping open and pawing through your checked luggage. Probably
the same issue with bullet mics and that, so a similar approach might be
the best idea.

There has been much dialogue re what to do when one is required to play
your
harmonicas to prove they aren't the makings of a terrorist
device.....and
one suggestion was to then just put them in with the checked baggage.
I've
been tempted to do so (for the weight factor alone)...since it was
really tough
to carry on a heavy case with an injured neck/shoulder last time I flew,
but
the thought of lost luggage convinced me of the necessity. One can
always
make up for missing clothes....but how do you replace what could be
vintage or
custom-made harps? I took this article off Aol just this morning.
