Well they did in Europe !
They were called 1824/24 12 hole Echo Vampers.
They look just like todays 12 hole Marine Bands
and you could get them from low C thru to regular B.
Next time you pass thru France let me know & I'll show you a full set.
As to what Dick actually played, I go along with your logic.
