11th HARMONICA SHINDIG
April 9, 2006
Manchester, UK
Southern Hotel
Nell Lane
Chorlton-cum-Hardy
Manchester
United Kingdom
An afternoon devoted to all aspects of the harmonica
1:30pm to 4:30pm
The event will include demonstrations and discussions of the different
styles
of harmonica playing in Blues, Jazz, Irish traditional music and many
other genres
and the makes and models of harmonicas used, focussing principally on
diatonic,
chromatic and tremolo instruments.
There will be showcase performances by blues bands The Hookers and Depot,
Irish traditional bands The Gallery and Shannagh and others,
all featuring the harmonica.
*****
For the first time we will also have a blues guitar workshop run by
expert picker Faul Bradley. There is no extra charge for this, all
plank-spankers
should just make their way to the appointed room (which will be signed).
The workshop will take place during the three hours of the shindig and
will last
about one hour.
In addition to this there will also be a one-hour Irish traditional fiddle
workshop presented by master fiddler Tony Trundle!
*****
There will be sessions throughout the afternoon which will be open to all
instrumentalists and an accomplished backing band will be present to
support the players.
Computers will be set up in a side room so that people can view the new
"No Excuses"
Harmonica Guide on CDROM and the "Jam Academy" DVD!
A large selection of vintage harmonica microphones will be laid out in a
side room
with a couple of valve amps so that prospective buyers can take a test
drive.
As before there will be a great deal of harp-related printed material,
catalogues and
information about harmonica services and societies for people to take away,
and I will be available to answer questions and give advice.
The Eagle Music trade stand will be present allowing people to purchase
harmonicas
and much else besides should they wish to.
This will be the 11th Shindig I have organised and I am sure that, like
its predecessors,
it will provide a friendly forum for meeting other harp players and
learning more
about the instrument.
Entry is £4 and includes a raffle with harmonicas donated by
Hering, Hohner, and Suzuki as prizes!

HARMONICA MASTERS WORKSHOPS 2006
November 1-5, 2006
Trossingen, Germany
featuring:
Steve Baker
Joe Filisko
David Barrett
Marc Breitfelder
Dick Bird (guitar)
In November 2003, Steve Baker joined forces with the Trossingen Cultural
Office
to present the first Harmonica Masters Workshops in Trossingen, Germany,
home
of the Hohner company. For years he had dreamed of a European harmonica
festival
in the form of an educational event, featuring top international players
as instructors.
The idea obviously struck a chord and the workshops were attended by
around 80
harp players from all over Europe.
The follow-up in 2004 was similarly well attended and also drew players
from the
United States. Due to the World Harmonica Festival, the Harmonica
Masters Workshops
didn't take place in 2005, but will return to Trossingen for the third
time in 2006.
This event is unique in Europe and combines seminars lasting several
days, taught by
leading professional players and educators, with evening concerts and
open sessions.
Alongside Steve Baker and Joe Filisko, the foremost authority on
traditional harmonica
styles, the organizers have succeeded in engaging David Barrett, the
most published
author of harmonica instructional material in the world. North German
harmonica crack
Marc Breitfelder will also be presenting a course and Steve's long-time
friend and
accompanist Dick Bird (Have Mercy, Mudsliders, Long John Baldry) will be
teaching
fingerpicking blues, slide and ragtime guitar.
Classes take place in the Hohner Conservatory, concerts and sessions in the
post-industrial chic of the Kesselhaus, the newly renovated power
station on the former
Hohner factory site. Trossingen is set in the beautiful Black Forest
region and also offers
easy access to the Alps, Switzerland and Eastern France as well as all
areas of Southern
Germany. Various categories of hotel accomodation are available in the
immediate
vicinity of the venues.
The Harmonica Masters Workshops offer you, the player, a unique
opportunity to study
your instrument under the guidance of some of today's leading players
over a period of
several days, as well as hanging out with them in the evenings and
watching them in
action at close quarters. They also provide the opportunity to meet and
learn from fellow
students, who make up a remarkable cross section of European harmonica
afficionados.
Instructors and course content:
* Steve Baker (language: English/German)
How to optimize your playing in order to get the maximum out of your
abilities. Solo
construction, phrasing and rhythm. Fine tuning and adjustment. Playing
with others,
accompaniment, arrangements for harp.
* David Barrett (language: English)
Improvising Blues Harmonica - how to learn to build solos. David will
guide participants
through the principles of solo construction with plenty of hands on
experience and
opportunities to play.
* Marc Breitfelder (language: German)
How to combine modern playing techniques such as overblows with
traditional styles,
forging connections between jazz, rock and traditional blues.
* Joe Filisko (language: English)
Tongue blocking, rhythmic patterns, hand effects. Traditional blues
harmonica styles
and how these evolved into the various different post-war styles
