VS: [Harp-L] Harp Commander VS Anti-Feedback Plus
I agree with John. I have had Kinder AFB+ for a couple of months. I have
also a Fender Bassman 59 bought from Rod in the mid 80's. Before Kinder
I have mostly used smaller amp. Somehow, not only feedback, Kinder
lights my Bassman up also with smaller volumes. Still I prefer smaller
amps, my favourite amp has been Fender Champ Tweed from late 50's. Just
bought a Gibson GA 20 1955. Best sounding amp I ever had. But not with
Kinder. My Astatic Ceramic (!) sounds superb straight into Gibson. So, I
think Kinder is worth using with bigger amps, not with smaller ones.

Aihe: RE: [Harp-L] Harp Commander VS Anti-Feedback Plus
I have no experience with the Harp Commander, but I do own a Kinder
AFB+. Rick Estrin uses one for his overseas gigs when toting his Harp
King amp isn't feasible. He told me that he loves his AFB+, and that it
works flawlessly for him on the Super Reverbs, Bassman etc. that he is
usually given to play on across the pond.
The Kinder will give you an incredible amount of feedback control. I use
mine with a 60 watt 4X10 Blues DeVille. I have a 12AY7 in the first tube
slot. Other than that, she's all stock. With the right settings, I can
hold the mic in front of the speakers with the amp on 10. It goes to 12,
but I chickened out at 10.
Some people have stated that the AFB+ colors the tone of the amp
somewhat. If you are a fan of Rod Piazza's tone, this shouldn't be a
problem. When using the unit with a large amp, the tone will slightly
resemble Piazza's (or more correctly, the Kinder Harp King's) tone. That
is, as the feedback is reduced, the amp with have a slight crunch in the
tone, which is actually a pretty cool sound. The crunch is kind of a
thickening or "cut" of the sound as the note is introduced. Think of it
as the note literally coming THROUGH the speaker, instead of FROM the
speaker. The bottom end is also improved slightly as a by-product of the
anti-feedback process. John Kinder says that the AFB+ actually favors
larger amps such as the DeVille or the RI Bassman. However, I also use
the AFB+ with a tweed Princeton with excellent results.
The AFB+ was worth every penny of the $360 price tag to me. All I could
think of after I used it a couple of times was all of the amps I've sold
over the years due to excessive feedback. So many times lately I have
thought: "Man, I wish I had this amp or that amp back again!" What a
world of tone I could have explored, if I had just had an AFB+.
It is a lot of money to spend, but when I think of the thousands of
dollars that I have spent over the years on amps (most of which would
have been perfect for harp except for the feedback) then I feel that it
is a small price to pay.

Can anyone comment on the merrits of Kinder's Anti-Feedback Plus as
compared
with the Holmes Harp Commander II?
Thanks!
