We play a lot of guitar driven insturmentals. Several by one of my idols, Freddie King. I like to try and play as lyrically as possible during these tunes as the guitar playing is usually pretty aggressive varied. I frequently throw in some melodies (mostly vocal) from my favorite blues songs to really shift gears for a solo or two. Some that come to mind:
Forty Four by Howlin' Wolf
Too Late by Little Walter...all on holes 2 and 3 in cross. Just play the right rhythm
Mellow Down Easy by Little Walter
Juke by Little Walter...I'll even transpose the key over the 4 chord
Joyful Noise melody ala Derek Trucks with no bends
The Peanuts Theme - usually in first position. It is the same pattern starting on 1 blow or 4 blow.
Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes which has no bend in cross
Somewhere Over the Rainbow towards the end of the song using a 5 overblow (thanks Jason Ricci)
Today I am going to try and learn the vocal line to Son House' Grinnin' In Your Face. It will probably never be recognized by a crowd, but it will be my salute to one of my favorite bluesmen.
Mike
ps. I never directly quote a song more then once or twice a night. I do, however, usually use most of these melodies as starting points for my own motifs. If you need tabs, let me know and I can probably post a couple some time today.

How about some ideas for popular tunes that lay out well in
2nd or 3rd that will work with standard blues changes?
I met a local harp player recently who tore up a version
of the Gilligans Island theme song, which would be
a cool thing to pull out in the middle of tune. Not sure how
tough it would be though.
