[Harp-L] Re: Sit-In Stories

About ten years ago I went to McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA to buy a G harp. After
using McCabe's silly little hand-pump gizmo to test it, I paid my money and then wanted to really
test the harp. I heard some nice blues coming from one of the adjacent practice rooms and saw an
approachable looking young man (Todd Washington) playing guitar. So I walked into the room and
asked if he could play something in D.

"Sure" he said, "come on in!"

Only after I got further into the room did I notice an older fellow sitting in the corner, head
bent down with a big hat on, hunched over a Steel National guitar. They didn't seem to mind my
sitting in and they launched into a D blues/ I started playing my new G harp and as I'm playing,
the old dude in the corner started to sing. I immediately recognized his voice and froze -
stopped playing dead in my tracks and nearly dropped my new harp to the floor as I realized the
old dude was TAJ MAHAL!

"Play some more" he insisted in his gruff voice as he continued to play his guitar. I think that
was the worst stage fright I've ever had, but somehow I managed to finish the song. "That was
pretty good, but you should use more chords and octaves like this." And then he pulled out his
own harp and demonstrated his trademark tongueblock style!

  So that's my sit-in story.
