Subject: [Harp-L] Charlie McCoy - Orange Blossom Special

"Elizabeth, thanks a lot for that video at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_cT14JALaQ&NR.
?Did u notice that the video fails to show the second harp switch, at 0:48
seconds? It shows Charlie playing right thru it - ah, the magic of editing.
Another observation - towards the end, it appears that, once again, Charlie
is chewing gum during the performance. That's ONE way of keeping one's mouth
from drying out!

....You're very welcome Ron....it could be my computer....but just before
.48 I see a camera fadeout just as he's switched harps....and then he comes
back into focus through an audience shot again....but what you see as him
chewing gum (and I have no idea if he does this or not, not being all that familiar
with the man)....is one moment only when it looks as though he's just
stretching his jaw before continuing that incredible performance...but I did wonder
how on earth anyone could play as he did without drying out.
The tape isn't the best...it glitches a couple of times...but at about 1:53
I believe ....it clearly shows him switching harps a couple of times....very
fascinating stuff. I have it on CD and an LP, but never saw him actually
play Orange Blossom Special before. Now I understand why some folks are so
taken with trying to play it....what an awesome performance! The man is
incredible. His performance at SPAH last year was terrific too....he's lost nothing
to age....his version of Shenandoah as beautiful as anything I've ever heard.
