Words. An example (Tom, Tom, Greedy Gut), learned by children to learn rhythm with patty cake hand slaps and song:

Tom, Tom,
Gree dy gut,
Gree dy gut,
Gree dy gut,
Tom, Tom,
ate tha meat,
ate tha meat,
Gone!

Where "gree dy gut" and "ate tha meat" are the same rhythm but the different words help you keep where you are in the sequence straight.
