[Harp-L] Musicians Listening to Musicians

Interesting postings on the "L" lately. Very revealing and fascinating.

To the most opinionated - is this a case of Musicians Listening to Musicians (for the most part - not to dis anyone who posted an opinion and doesn't consider themselves a musician)?

The poor musician doesn't get to enjoy the music as much as Citizens do. The musician will often pass the music through his analysis filter before he lets it spill into his enjoyment receptacle.

Interesting experience - I just returned from the IAJE Convention. 9000 attendees from all over the world, mostly musicians and/or educators, playing and listening to each other.

Of course, the scheduled acts were of the highest caliber. Since this is a Jazz Convention, 95% of the music a showingofhowadvancedinjazztheplayeris. This means that the music is mostly enjoyed by other jazz musicians.

Very cerebral, very precise, very perfect, for the most part (ie - Chick Corea - Jack DeJohnette - Eddie Gomez Trio ).

However.....

there was an 11 PM performance on one at one of the side venues - Javon Jackson Band (steeped deep and hard in FUNK) w/special guest Dr. Lonnie Smith on B-3.

This was not perfect, precise notes. This was not technical brilliance. This was not hip substitute changes.

The audience, up to this point having shown solid appreciation for all the intricacies and sophistication of the jazz performances, glowed with a different light not seen at the other concerts.

I believe that they had more FUN and weren't afraid to show it through movement, comments yelled out, the smiles on the faces, and the warmer applause.

Finally, a group made them forget that they were Musicians Listening to Musicians for a while. It was refreshing to see.

Sometimes I think that some of the "L" Listers need to listen to some Dr. Lonnie Smith and shake their booties.
