Rob, You are a lucky S.O.B.! The first time I
heard Stevie play Alfie I was shocked. I never thought
anyone could play chromatic with such virtuosity.What
was he 18 then ? I'm referring to
the recording Motown didn't want to release "Eivets
Rednow" (Stevie Wonder backwords) which had no picture
of him on the cover;they felt the material and lack of
vocals would be bad for his
"pop" image. This is what Stevie told me when I met
him at (check out this billing) a Sonny Terry,Brownie
McGhee show at The Troubadour decades ago. They were
opening for Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 ! Anyone who
digs chromatic harp (the way Stevie plays how could
you not ?) should check this record out. Most of what
I learned about R&B style chrome playing came from
tearing apart this disc.
