the snakes are the guys in the record biz who constantly took advantage of these early blues artists. sbwII finally got wise later in his career. the expressions means that someone is doing all the work (fattening frogs) for the benefit of someone else who gets the prize (snakes). These artists wrote the songs, lived the hard lives that motivated them, but were ultimately cut quite short in the profits that were generated by them (at least while they were alive).
