Re: [Harp-L] Adler
Larry Adler wrote a autobiography called
"It Ain't Necessarily So." It's entertaining.
His personality was flamboyant, to say the least, as was his playing.
His sides with Django (as far as I know, there are only
four) are on the CD "Maestro of the Mouth Organ" -
label is Living Era. These tracks are awesome!
"I Got Rhythm" is blazing, and "Body and Soul" is very emotional.
CD also contains his great version of "Rhapsody in Blue."
Apparently Mr. Adler was primarily an ear player (harmonica and piano) and didn't
learn to read music till later in his life. This is amazing to me - his ear and
musicianship were astounding.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the cool Larry Adler
clip. I'm sure someone can fill in the gaps on my
knowledge of him. He was a very successful concert
performer making $100,000 a year in the late 40's
early 50's and I believe was blacklisted during the
McCarthy era . He also did some recording w/the
amazing Django Rheinhardt in the "jazz hot" vein. More
bio info would be appreciated.
