c.p.s. is an old abbreviation for "cycles per second" and means the same
as "Hz" today does.

Why not repairing it?
The PE56 or 565 are the predecessors of the SM 58. The difference is, that
those old mics "colour" your voice their own way. By the way: The PE-xx
numbers have their equivalent in the "w/o PE Unidyne series", when you simply
add a 5 to the PE-xx numbers, i.e. PE-54 -> 545, PE 56 -> 565.

No, the reason for inventing low-Z mics was indeed the usable length of cable.
