So the questions that come to my mind here are
1, how do you learn 3rd position blues playing,
using scale practice?

Let him try developing chops (i.e. short riffs borrowed, stolen or invented
etc.) in 2nd position using ONLY the blues scale then transposing them into
3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.this technique will train both the ear the articulation
freeing the player, when in a more "real" situation, to play more of what he
hears in head as he hears it than repeating set pieces.
