Re: [Harp-L] Shocking problems - tips on checking wiring

Many clubs and bars do not have electrical wiring that is up to code (here in the USA). What that means is that the outlets at the stage may not be properly grounded, the polarity flipped from one outlet to the other, etc. Ultimately, that causes the rather common (unfortunately!) issue with getting shocked lips at the vocal mic. Also, if the mixing board is plugged into a "ground-lift" adapter (to eliminate ground loops) you can get shocked. Here are some tips to prevent death by electrocution!

 1. Buy an outlet testing device and verify that the outlets in use are properly wired and grounded. These devices can be found at most hardware/home improvement stores and are not very expensive.

 2. If the outlets fail the tester let the club owners know, and don't use those outlets! Code not up to wiring is a major safety hazard (to you and others) and a major liability to the club.

 3. If your harp amp is not grounded, get a tech to ground it! Grounding the amp will save you if the amp shorts from a blown resistor, capacitor, tube, tranny, etc.. The fuse will also help save you too so don't put in the wrong value fuse!

 4. Don't ground lift the mixing board since this will force the ground through you! If there is a ground loop issue, it is better to ground lift the offending signal processor (i.e. reverbs, compressors). However, a good quality line conditioner (i.e Furman) will do wonders to reduce electric noise induced by those pesty neon beer light ballasts and light dimmers.

 5. Try to have all devices plugged into the same electric circuit if possible. This greatly helps keep a common ground and reduces potential for ground loops and shocks.
