[Harp-L] I Don't Pucker, I Drink It

Yay. Changing the terminology is the first step towards enlightenment....the very same way I suggest you don't "blow" and "suck or draw", but merely inhale and exhale. (I'm thrilled to see some of the harmonica educators starting to change their terminology to inhale and exhale as well.)

I use the drink of water example. Get a glass of water and take a drink. You'll notice you do so effortlessly and without THINKING. It's natural. You don't follow the glass with your eyes as you bring it towards your mouth. You also don't start reaching for the glass with your lips (puckering) when it gets within an inch or two of your mouth. You merely relax your lips, allowing the glass to rest on your lower lip and then tip up. If you were to try to drink water in the "puckerharp" way, that water would dribble down your chin and out the sides of your mouth. Very innefficient way to drink, and slurpy sounding, too.

So, "As you drink water, so shall you play harmonica" is my creed.

I offer a simple change in nomenclature: It's not pucker; it's
"Single-Hole."
