Chris Michalek and the latest version of the Buddha's Groove opened for
Jason. Quite excellent except that his guitar player drowned him out with
volume in spots.

This was my first time to hear Jason Ricci and the New Blood live. They
lived up to the expectations that have been set by all the rave reviews that
he gets. If you haven't heard him live, find a way to do it.

During the second set, Chris sat in for one song and again at the end for
the climactic song that had them swapping licks. Hearing them play together
was quite a treat. A very memorable night of music it was.

I could easily gush on and on about the show, but I was out too late for a
guy who gets up at 4:30 in the morning, so I'll just give the executive
summary.

Hoooolllleeee $#|+ that was good!

Peace and music,
Dave

Hi,

I have never heard this cat play, but if he can pull off an abbreviated
version of Butterfields' version "Everything Gonna Be Alright", he would be sure
to impress. It has a solo intro, with minimal vocals, and a break that he
could kick butt on. The hardest part, except for playing it, would be cutting it
down to 90 seconds. Extended intro, two verses, and outro could do it. I am
talking about his live versions on"Butterfield Live" and " Live at Winterland"
condensed.
Good luck to ya kid, and nice going.

All the best,

Christos Mastakas

Nancy:

Good job on the post. A lot more people read than reply so the message is
getting out. As for song, try Wammer Jammer by the Magic Dick (J. Geils
Band), or Juke by Little Walter. Either one should blow the judges socks
off.

Tom Stryker asked me to post to you all on behalf of LD Miller, the "12
year old Harp Monster on AGT". He's a long time member of the site, but
isn't allowed by NBC to post to any public forums right now. He is
trying to route his way back from the Aug. 16 finale and 17 results show
on America's Got Talent to make it to the last day of SPAH, but the
convention dates are in the hands of NBC PR right now.

I've been blessed to be college and performing arts agent and interim
manager for Clayton Miller Blues Band (LD Miller) for the past 4 1/2
years and they have become family to me. They are a lovely family and
are so supportive of all Artists and especially harmonica players
everywhere. The family grew up on the blues around the campfire and
have blessed to be out there on the road making music for the past 4
years. Whatever fellow harmonica players think of LD's style and skill
at this age, he has certainly brought a tremendous amount of mainstream
attention to the instrument thru his exposure in recent years and would
love to continue to bring more attention to the instrument, while he
grows as a musician. I'm not sure if you guys saw the TV Guide piece
last week, but it was a 3 page spread calling 2006 the Summer of the
Harmonica.

I can respond personally to a couple of the questions I've gotten in
recent weeks from fellow harmonica players particularly. I know that
the 90 second time allowance for America's Got Talent is very
restrictive and the pressure to appeal to a mass audience has meant
sticking to the fast stuff so far. I don't know, but believe that for
the finals on Aug. 16, they'll be trying to show off LD's ability to
slow down and show his feel for the blues as well as his voice. For an
example of that, his appearance with Joe Bonamassa is up on youtube.com,
but he is constantly learning from the pros and absorbs every critique
and tries to learn from it. While LD knows the Popper-style licks
appeal to a mass audience, I believe his bigger influences growing up
were Junior Wells and Sonny Boy...I know there are other classics he's
mentioned that escape me right now. I apologize for being a non-harp
player here, but Tom thought you all would like to hear from the LD
camp.

So, If anyone has any suggestions that fit in the 90 seconds allowable,
LD and his family would welcome it. They have about 2 days to submit
their final song choices for TV clearance, so please feel free to
respond here...he'll be reading.

SO THE BIG TOUGH QUESTION: If you had only 90 seconds to show off range
and variety as well as a little vocals on the #1 show in America right
now, what song would you choose?
Thanks. Nancy O.

Fred & Sylvia,

Hey, there!!! Dave Mulford here, guitarist and vocalist for The Piping Hot
Buttery Biscuits of Blues... I just wanted to say thank you for that
compliment... and tell you what a privelege it was for The Biscuits to work
with you students! You all did SO well, and I saw great progress in every
one of you as the weekend progressed. The Sunday Jam was the highpoint for
me... truly just a celebration of the Blues in general, and harp in
particular! Keep jamming them Blues, and I hope to see you again soon! BTW,

Gindick's Jam Camp last weekend was a great experience. How could it not
be, under the guidance of Jon, Richard Sleigh, Dennis Gruenling, and Mark
Wilson. I though the camp was really well done, with lots of time for
playing (with feedback - no, not THAT kind of feedback - the constructive
critique kind) intermingled with small class instruction and 1-on-1
coaching. We eased in with a big acoustic jam, got some of Jon's basics,
had a 1-on-1 with Dennis on vibrato and tongue techniques, then an electric
jam with good comments from the coaches. Day 2 had for me 1) overviews of
the coaches' styles and approaches with them playing, 2) a jam with Dennis
giving a great approach to organizing which holes to use when, and we used
that to build solos in the jam, and 3) a big electric jam at night were we
stretched out our chops. Day 3 found me in a jam with Richard where he had
us all doing comping to Got My Mojo behind the soloists - way cool - and
also had us doing some great exercises to improve our performance skills and
outlook. Then came Jon who was excellent in leading an acoustic jam later
with more of a ballad feel. These jams were small groups of about 6-10, so
plenty of chance to play and hear the coaches comments. Wrapped up with us
all showing our new skills on stage in AJ's bar, backed by Dave Mulford and
the "Biscuits" blues band, who can make anyone sound great, they're so
tight. The bewildered, non-camp bar patrons who stumbled into the show were
highly entertained.

I was very impressed with the structure put together to address a variety of
skill levels of the campers. Jon, Mark, Dennis, and Richard really were able
to provide not only something, but a lot, for everyone from rank beginner to
advanced intermediate. There were often concurrent sessions going on and I
think Jon and the guys had the balance just about right, no small feat with
a wide range of skills. I had to miss a repair seminar by Richard and a jam
with Dennis and Richard where (I heard) they had the campers trading 12's,
8's, and 4's - good stuff. Looks like I'll have to go back!

I know there are several alternatives to this sort of thing, and I encourage
anyone to get to a Camp, Masterclass, SPAH, Blues Week, workshop, or
whatever, whenever they can. I also know that Jam Camp is not a cheap
investment, but if you are looking to get out of a rut or elevate your
playing, this is one of the few, most effective, and damned-est fun ways to
do it. Check it out if you can.

It seems that so many new harps are being discussed and discovered by our
harp community. What I am hoping to start with this post is another "roll
call". I think many of us would like to know what brand and models others
are using and perhaps explanations why. I will start the process and see if
anybody cares to follow suit.

I have always played Hohners. Overall quality and playability has made me
stick to them. Model of choice overall, Special 20's but also play some
custom Marine Bands. Starting to use the few Golden Melody's I own, mostly
cuz it seems to be the harp of choice for the "monsters" on the diatonic
scene. I play a lot of styles besides just blues; folk, rock, reggae, cajun
etc.

Thanks for the great clips. The new bass player sounds solid. I bet the whole show was a huge blast. Which amp did you use? It added just the right amount of rip for what I think you were going for.

Looking forward to hearing more from this show,

Mike

Lee Oskars for me, been using them for what seems a couple decades. Play
some amp'd, but mostly through a 545 into the PA. I'm am awaiting reviews on
the new Suzuki fire breath/pure harp, as I'm tempted to change. Might even
consider one of Tim's or Bob's customs....Steve

I use custom MB's and Special 20's from Bob Meehan and Tim Moyer. Bob also
customized three of my old mid-eighties Meisterklas harps. I use Hering
Vintage 1923's and Hohner big river's as back-ups. all my chromatics are
Hohner.

I use Golden Melodies and Special 20's (since the GM's don't come in low tunings in F#, F, and Eb).

Clint Hoover got me using them when he showed me to overblow. They also fit nice in my hand and I like the tuning. They're easy to work with, but there are other harps that ob easier. I am anxious to try the new Suzuki harps. Just waiting to get a key other then G.

The GM harps were way harder for me to get all my bends straightened out then my Special 20's. Like most harp players, I am a glutton for punishment. :)
