One aspect in diatonic technique not explored enough is as Winslow suggests - not only should one strengthen and bring forward the notes created through different bending techniques, but also learn to back off on all the "given" notes to narrow the "sound gap" between them. I am constantly on the "seamless" path, so my notes all sound like notes no matter how they are created. (Work in progress - always).
OB's can be played in tune - they are far from "what you get is what you get". It is a more refined technique, but well worth the effort.

and part of learning to use them well is to compensate, partly by
working to make them stronger and partly in just smoothing out the
relative volume of notes in the line overall so that some don't fade
into the wallpaper and others don't jump out like hungry wolves (unless
you're going for that sort of an effect).
