Sorry for using jargon. Penta means 5. Pentatonic scale is a five note  
scale. The black keys on the piano is an example of a pentatonic  
scale. The 2 pentatonic scales I use most for rock are the major and  
minor pentatonic scale.
C major pentatonic scale: C D E G A
which is the same notes as the A minor pentatonic scale
A minor pentatonic scale: A C D E G

The Allman Brothers and the Dead use a major pentatonic scale a lot.  
Reggae uses a minor pentatonic scale a lot.
