Here's LD playing with another young gun (slow blues). I dig a lot of Bonomassa's stuff...although I am not a huge fan or blues coupled with effects pedals. For somebody as good as him, it can actually hurt the sound.
I don't dislike LD and I don't dislike speed chops, but here's some observation on what I've seen lately...
In my band, we would call LD's solo wanky. That's what we refer to throwing in flash over substance. It is ok to wank in our band for part of a solo, but it would be sacralige to wank on a whole song. Wanking can be a dynamic thing that works wonders.
His speed and accuracy is a great feat, but he stretches it way outside of the box to the point of hurting the band and the song. IMO he needs to really work on his phrasing with the fast riffs. He leaves little space and takes a huge solo without creating anything melodic or dynamic (or in the context of the progression). Listen to Joe's solo to hear what I mean. Most people would be impressed with that, but would find it tiresome on a whole cd. Joe's wanking is more musical.
Technical tricks like this should be reserved to tasteful implemenation. That being said, I think the kid is only going to get better (although he's been playing for 6 years which is a long time for a "kid"), and longer then several of us on the list. However, I don't consider him a harp "monster", which to me infers mastery of the insturment and it's use in music.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks so much for your post regarding LD Miller
and his adventures with America's Got Talent! You
gotta know that we're ALL rootin' for him to do
well.
You asked for a suggestion for JD's next 90 seconds
onstage... here's my 2 cents.
Good to keep the masses happy with that
in-your-face speed-drill playing... BUT this time
use the first 30-40 seconds as a slow-blues
introduction following cord changes with some
soulful harp and featured JD vocals... then, have
the song kick-it-up a notch and finish with his now
signature speed-demon crowd-pleasing licks.
That should show the judges that he's not just a
"one-trick-pony" yet still get the crowd onto its
feet with a hot finish.
I wish JD all the BEST luck in the world, and it
would certainly be great to meet him at SPAH, but I
undersand completely if he can't make it. There's
always next year.
Stay well,
Harpin' in Colorado,
