Re: [Harp-L] Harp Legacy of young geezers

At 40, I can accept being a young geezer, and this is my (abridged) story... about 21 years ago, I received, as a Christmas gift from my dear mother, Jon Gindick's country and Blues Harmonica for the Musically Hopeless, complete with a Pocket Pal harp (if I recall, it was a German made model.) I guess I had a song in my soul waiting for a vehicle, and that harp seemed to fit the bill. I learned a bunch about basic technique from that book. Then, must have been the spring or summer of that winter passed, I met up with a friend of a friend's brother who was playing some guitar. Sharing similar blues and rock musical tastes, we clicked, and started playing everywhere together... porches, stoops, street corners, parks, RR tressels, kitchens, anywhere and everywhere, any time we could (I remember a friend of mine came up with some free Pink Floyd tickets, Neil (gtr player) and I had a rehearsal scheduled, couldn't give that up even for Pink Floyd. So we climbed in my friend's old Honda Civic (w/ no radio,) Neil in back with his gtr, me in the front passenger seat, and we played an impromptu traveling soundtrack from NJ to Nassau Coliseum (Long Island, NY.) ) Soon, with a lot of support from our friends, we started playing all the open mic nights we could find. From there, I started meeting many musicians. Every person I met would lead me to meeting two or three more musicians. Now, the majority of my friends are musicians of one type or another and jams or bands crop up all the time. I can't recall a time since that fateful Christmas day 21 years past that I haven't been playing in some way, shape or form.

nice thread, Iceman.

Jim.

Yes, everyone has a story.

So far, only the "old" geezers have responded. What is wonderful is finding the common threads that weave through all these memories and stories. Common denominators of harmonica evolution, interest and experiences are being revealed, perhaps universal experiences, with harp-l as a source for gathering the info. We may be onto something exciting (at least for this small special interest group).

Instead of shaking your heads at how the "old" geezers are acting, you "young" geezers have tales to tell of your evolution and introduction, too. Perhaps a common thread will be John Popper for the Gen X'ers as far as a starting point goes.

So, what's your story?
