Tom,
You're absolutely right . I can't imagine
a father & son more accomplished (or different) on
harmonica .A Jr. anecdote: "my father's goal was to
lift the harmonica out of the gutter-mine is to put it
right back there where it belongs". John Sebastian
(Jr.) is a wonderful songwriter and excellent diatonic
player. Unlike his dad, he's a little sheepish on the
chromatic. He appeared on Dave Sanborn's way too
short-lived music TV show where he apologized for his
playing and Sanborn mentioned what a difficult
instrument the chrome is. All in all,
I love this guy and it would be a real treat to hang
with him. J.S. trivia:
he and Paul Butterfield were label mates at one time
and were on flip sides of a 45 sampler doing blues
tunes. J.S. is quite knowledgeable about that genre
though The Lovin' Spoonfuln was obviously a huge
departure from that. As much as I love blues the world
would've lost many musical gems had he stuck rigidly
to that style.
I encourage Butterfield fans to check out the
Paul Butterfield Fund &
Society started by his son Gabe and Gabe's fiancee
Sally Squitieri.
Happy blowin'
Chris
