Re: [Harp-L] Re: Sorry, I have to do this

Sonnytone,

Hi Gary, is 'Sonnytone' inferring your monicker to the tone of the Great harp Player Sonny Terry? I've never heard that nickname before so congrats on a very original one. I know you use to work with Sonny Terry, and have heard you are an awesome player as well...so I like it!

I will not consider changing mine tho and meant NO disrespect towards anyone-.Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf were STAGE names to replace McKinley Morganfield and Chester Burnett.

They didn't use them as MIDDLE -nicknames. On the other hand Roosevelt Sykes recorded plenty WITHOUT the middle name The Honeydripper and has MANY recording under the name Roosevelt Sykes...let me explain where HE (Mr.Sykes) got it from...(btw,.it's an old blues term that was kickin' round longer than him).

In doing so I will explain why I chose "The Honeydripper" as my nickname, although I too am a BIG Roosevelt Sykes fan, I took it from the same person HE got it from. That would be the late great JOE LIGGINS. Joe penned an instr. song called THE HONEYDRIPPER, Mr. Sykes did a cover of that song in 1945 and did pretty well on the R&B charts with it on RCA's bluebird label. He then started at that point using it as a nickname.

Joe Liggins named his band The Honeydrippers and that's where "I" got it from. I believe Robert Plant later called his post Led Zeppelin band The Honeydrippers as well.

I named my Blues Newsletter 'The Honeydripper' back in 1976 and that's when I decided to use it as MY nickname as well, just like Mr.Sykes did when he heard & covered Liggins tune.

I think think it's fantastic that you got to work with Roosevelt, his is obviously a big hero of mine as well and I to LOVE sing his song "Drivin' Wheel" his was a MONSTER Boogie Pianist as well...I have ONLY respect for him.

There's even a Modeling agency on the net called The Honeydrippers so I guess there is room for us all.

But I'm sorry if I've offended you in anyway.

Love, Peace and all The Best,
  rob 'the honeydripper' paparozzi,-)

Rob, all due respect, "The Honeydripper" was the earned nickname of a man I
played with, the legendary piano player Roosevelt Sykes. For respect of his
legacy do you think you could use another surname. Is anything calling
themselves Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters? Some of these pieces of history need to be
respected and honored. Please consider.
