Years ago an LA session guitarist told me it wasn't enoough to just be a great reader but you had to play musicaly.
When I was in school I had friend that was a classical violinist great reader but couldn't improvise a note.
She now plays in the Delawre Symphony Orchestra.
In school the classical players studied harmony in the Common Practice stlye. They harmonized watched out for parallel this and that n6 chords etc.
The jazz harmony was different. It was oreinted towards the "practical". The teacher would play a game of mental challenge. He would say stuff like,
"what is the V of V in Bb or what is the tritone sub in Ab". The training was different for each discipline.
Crap makes great compost to grow stuff.
